The way you treat one another can either be a huge problem in your relationship or a huge benefit. It isn’t affairs or infidelity. It’s time. We lead busier lives than ever before. Even when we’re in the same room we’re spending time doing other things. We bring work home into our living rooms. We’re text messaging, Facebooking (when did that become a verb?), and playing video games during the precious moments we can grab together. We’re driving kids from soccer practice to piano lessons and play dates in between. But, we’re devoting very little one on one time to one another without any of these other distractions.

One cell phone company had a commercial a few years ago that about sums it up. A man was sitting in bed surfing the net on his phone while his wife comes into the room wearing a sexy little number. He didn’t even glance up from his phone to notice. The catch phrase of the commercial was ‘Really?’

Really. That’s about what’s it’s coming to in modern marriages and adult relationships. We’re losing glue that binds us together because there are just too many distractions. Even the noble distractions such as work and making a good life for our families are getting in the way of maintaining and growing the most important relationship we’ll have in our lives.

By the end of the day we fall into bed exhausted and may find the energy to ask one another to turn off the lights. Then morning comes and it’s off to the races. How do we find time for each other when we barely have time for everything we need to do in a day?

Unplug at a Certain Time Each Day

Set a ‘cutoff’ time for all tech. Computers, mobile phones, iPads, iPods, televisions, and video games. Put them away for the day and have a real conversation together. Find out what’s going on in each other’s lives and rediscover the spark of passion that you never thought would fade when you first met.

Believe me, it hasn’t faded. It’s just been buried beneath mountains of stuff you’re doing in a day. Your marriage or relationship needs to become a priority. That’s not going to happen as long as you’re distracted by every shiny new piece of tech that comes along 24-7.

Get a Hobby Together

Doing things together, as a couple, is a great way to really spend some serious quality time together. I know many couples who bought sail boats for that very reason. It’s great to go out sailing together. It’s an investment that you’ll want to get your money’s worth out of so you’ll make time to do it and it’s fairly close quarters so it’s difficult to ignore one another.

There are other hobbies you might want to consider though that will allow you to spend quality time together: golf, ballroom dancing, and cooking classes are all great ideas to consider.

You don’t have to look far for ways to make time for each other. Sometimes though you don’t even know the need exists until it’s too late and the relationship has ended.
