The job of the Best Man is very important. As an integral part of the wedding, it is your job to not only prepare your best man wedding speeches, but also to make sure that everything during the wedding runs smoothly.
Make sure you have the wedding rings and the marriage license in a safe place if you are in charge of holding them. If the couple is leaving right after the reception to their honeymoon, make sure their car is packed with their luggage, tickets, directions, passports, and anything else they could possibly need for their trip. Make sure the Groom looks his best and is clean and neat. Straighten his tie and button any missing buttons. This is his big day, and you want to help him look his absolute best.
If something goes a little amiss during the wedding ceremony, make sure you are available to help fix it. You most likely won’t have to deal with something out of “The Runaway Bride.” Just be prepared to help out, whether the flower girl is crying or if a spot gets on the Groom’s jacket. The rehearsal generally sorts out these types of problems before they actually happen, but just being prepared can make the difference.
Be ready to lend a hand if something goes a little awry during the wedding. Big problems are usually sorted out during the rehearsal, and so you generally won’t have to deal with those, but be ready in case the flower girl gets nervous and stops or if the Groom’s collar is popped up. You probably won’t experience a “Runaway Bride” kind of deal, but keep an eye out so you can lend a hand wherever it’s needed.
After the wedding ceremony, your job as a Best Man becomes unclear. You may be appointed as the Master of Ceremonies for the reception, or you may be charged with driving the Bride and Groom. Once again, maintain a continuous flow of communication with the Bride and Groom to be completely clear in what your responsibilities are. At the reception is where you will present your speech. If you are in charge of introducing the other speakers, make sure you can pronounce their names correctly. You definitely don’t want to botch the name of the Bride’s father. When it is your time to speak, take a few seconds to compose yourself and just do it. You are ready: you’ve written an awesome, heart-felt speech, you’ve practiced it, and you are prepared. After your speech, the Bride and the Groom will have their first dance. You join in sometime after them, make sure you know when, and it is generally with the Maid of Honor. You probably don’t need to practice this, but just be aware.
As you can see, you have a variety of responsibilities to attend to besides your best man speech. Once again, make sure you know exactly what you are in charge of, and make sure it gets done, including your preparation for the big best man wedding speech. You want to help the Bride and Groom have an awesome wedding, and with your help, they can.
